Job Description

We are looking for 2024-2025 drivers!

Using a university vehicle for transportation, MVOs work with a team of 6-7 other student drivers to distribute advertising items for student organizations and UM departments. Work includes:

  • Stapling canvas advertisements onto plywood boards (and removing old ads)
  • Attaching and hoisting banners onto steel poles (and removing old banners)
  • Placing bus signs on university buses (and removing old ads)
  • Placing "table tents" in acrylic sign holders in University Unions buildings (and removing old ads)
  • Occasional lifting and repair of 6 x 4-foot plywood Diag boards.

In addition to placing these advertising media, MVOs are also responsible for delivering balloons to multiple campus and off-campus destinations. Deliveries are scheduled by a Student Manager, based on the class schedule that you provide. Most deliveries only take about 30-45 minutes, so you can squeeze them in between classes. Although SORC is closed on weekends, we occasionally (once or twice a semester) have large campus events on weekends that require balloon deliveries.

Work also includes basic maintenance/cleaning of van and equipment.

The number of hours for this job are quite flexible; you may work as few as 4 hours a week or as many as 10. SORC is open 10AM-6PM Monday through Friday, but MVO duties happen mostly outside regular hours. The following shifts are filled by a team of about 8 drivers (usually 3 or 4 per shift) so you do not have to commit to working every shift every week. MVO work is primarily:

  • Sundays between 10AM-1PM
  • Mondays after 5PM
  • Thursdays after 5PM
  • Balloon deliveries as needed by customer demand

University Unions is an organizational unit within Student Life which offers services, programs, spaces and student involvement opportunities within the Michigan League, Michigan Union and Pierpont Commons.

  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Deliver exemplary customer service to all guests of University Unions through a variety of forms of interaction
  • Cultivate an accessible, safe, and inclusive environment for all students, visitors, and guests within University Unions facilities, services, and programs

Job Requirements

Advertising routes are Sundays late morning, Mondays in the evening, and Thursdays in the evening. You must be able to work at least one of those times every week.

Applicants must be available for balloon deliveries any day of the week, before or between classes. All balloon deliveries are scheduled on an "as available" basis; we work around your class schedule and other commitments. We try to accommodate all deliveries on weekdays, but occasionally there are orders so large that we have to inflate them on weekends. If you have a latex allergy, this is not a safe job for you.

Also required are: thoroughness; willingness to cooperate on unexpected tasks; flexibility and problem solving skills; occasional availability for unusual delivery hours; availability regardless of inclement weather.

A valid driver license, knowledge of Michigan traffic laws (whether licensed in Michigan or not), and excellent driving record are required. Commercial driving experience is a plus.

Student employees of the Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) and Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) must complete the Clery Act Training and Responsible Employee Training courses. Implications of this can be discussed during the interview process.

UU Required Trainings: UU New Employee Kick-Off; DEI Basics 1 & 2; Responsible Employee/ Sexual Misconduct; Run, Hide, Fight. Your individual position may require additional trainings that are job specific.
