Job Description

We provide after-school programs for under-resourced families at 5 community centers in Ann Arbor and 1 in-school community center in Ypsilanti. Program Assistants play an important role in facilitating our dynamic after-school programs. Essential job duties include:  

  • Help prepare the space and materials for program 
  • Coordinate and facilitate social-emotional activities, academic lessons, projects, games, etc.
  • Engage with children in small groups, large groups, and individually. Typically a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children can be expected
  • In After School Program, work with children ranging from Kindergarten through 12th grade (some locations only have programming for elementary and/or middle school students)
  • In Summer Camp, work with children in rising 1st through rising 6th grades
  • Provide academic support to students as needed 
  • Facilitate transition times from one activity to another 
  • Monitor student safety and behavior and provide responsible supervision
  • Follow behavior management strategies and work with team members to provide consistent and age-appropriate guidance
  • Support enrichment group lesson facilitation and goals
  • Prepare meals and snacks for the attending students
  • Clean up the centers during and after program, including but not limited to taking out the trash, washing dishes, sweeping, mopping the floor, and sanitization protocols
  • Participate in team debrief meetings after program 
  • Other duties as assigned

Program Assistants are part of a collaborative team and are supervised by the Community Center Director. 

Our Ann Arbor based community centers Creekside, Hikone, and Bryant are located on the south side, Green Baxter Court is located on the northeast side, and Arrowwood Hills is located on the north side. All Ann Arbor locations are on AAATA or UofM bus lines. Our Ypsilanti based community center is located in southern Ypsilanti at Brick Elementary. Brick Community Center is not accessible by bus lines from UofM. 

Educational Value

This position is particularly suited for students interested in education, social work, psychology, and other related fields. It provides hands-on experience with children who live in under-resourced families and face multiple challenges. In this role, you will learn to work as a team and effectively engage with children. 

Job Requirements

This position needs people who love working with children. You must be friendly and fun, yet assertive and be able to set limits in a positive way. We are looking for energetic, outgoing, patient people who have great interpersonal skills. We have a great team and are looking for people who work hard and have fun at the same time. Prior experience working with children and/or youth programs is required.

This role requires someone to be consistently available 2-4 days a week, Mondays through Thursdays, from 3 to 6:30 pm. A minimum of 1 semester is required, and ongoing opportunities are available for the Fall, Winter, and Summer terms.

Other work days may be available depending on staff schedules and center needs.
