Job Description

The English Language Institute (ELI) is hiring a Student Engagement Assistant.

 

ELI an academic department in the College of LSA that provides language courses and other resources that enable international students and scholars at U-M to thrive and excel no matter what language they speak. The ELI seeks one or more independent, energetic, organized, dependable individuals with strong interpersonal and computer skills to support ELI’s academic programs and administrative team. 

 

Student Engagement Assistants assist ELI in engaging the international students at U-M who participate in our courses and programs. You will provide key support for ELI’s Conversation Circles program, one of the largest extracurricular programs for international students at U-M.

 

You will also design and lead 2-3 fun and engaging 'Student to Student' events for international students each semester. These events will be shaped by your interests and we will rely on your expertise and experience to design events that will be fun and engaging for international students, while also giving these students an opportunity to practice conversation in English and build their community here at U-M!

 

While in the office, you will also help answer and transfer phone calls and provide general office support. In this role you will have around 6 regular office hours per week, as well as work during several evenings, and one weekend, per semester. After your first year, returning Student Engagement Assistants will get a raise if you return to work with us again.

 

ELI offers several summer programs, and is active during Welcome and Orientation season, so our Student Engagement Assistants have opportunities for work year-round!

  1. Providing effective customer service to diverse populations

  2. Working with a diverse team on project, program and office management

  3. Developing social and cultural events and other programming for international students

  4. Producing effective written and verbal communication

Job Requirements
  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. 

  2. Comfort using a variety of computer software and web platforms, including basic knowledge of Google Suite programs and Microsoft Word and Excel, are required. 

  3. To be considered, candidates must be able to commit to working a minimum of 6 hours per week. Preference will be given to candidates who are available 8 hours per week. 

  4. International/intercultural experience, familiarity with other languages and cultures, and/or speaking a second or third language are a big plus in engaging with ELI’s diverse community.
