Job Description

Logistics, Transportation & Parking (LTP) is seeking interested students to work in support of University transportation services for our SAFERIDE Service.

The motor vehicle operator's primary responsibility is to transport members of the university community in a safe and timely manner. Drivers are expected to have a good working knowledge of campus geography, university buildings/landmarks, and common routes around campus in order to effectively transport passengers to their final destinations. Besides driving, operators are expected to connect with their passengers in order to effectively communicate and provide friendly customer service. The service area is limited to the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor Campuses and the area immediately surrounding it.

Because of the depth of responsibility surrounding student transportation, the most desirable candidate is one who is reliable, has a professional demeanor, and the ability to learn the responsibilities of the job. Because the candidate will ultimately become a representative of his/her department, candidates must be friendly, courteous, knowledgeable about the service, and familiar with Ann Arbor and University Campus locations.

This position requires candidates to obtain and/or maintain a medical certificate and is subject to pre-employment and random DOT drug screens.

Please include your Driver's license number in your application and/or resume.

Facilities and Operations seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the diverse people of Michigan, to sustain the excellence of the university, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives and ways of knowing and learning.

Educational Value

The prime attributes most Motor Vehicle Operators develop through this job are responsibility and teamwork. Because there is little supervision on the road, drivers must learn to depend on themselves and each other to keep the service on-track. Communication skills, accountability, and self-regulation are all developed through the responsibilities of a Motor Vehicle Operator. Furthermore, because drivers are often faced with unexpected challenges on the road, problem-solving skills are constantly being developed. Drivers must make quick decisions to keep the service active and efficient while maintaining the safety of both passengers and other drivers.
