Job Description

Palmer Commons serves the University of Michigan community by providing conference and event spaces and services, dining facilities and departmental office spaces as provisioned by the Office of the Provost, managed in accordance to University Unions guidelines. We strive to create an inclusive environment incorporating sustainable efforts where students, faculty, staff and guests come together as a community on common ground.

This customer service position supports all on-site meetings and events at Palmer Commons. Responsibilities include: Set-up and tear-down of audio-visual equipment, set-up and tear-down of conference furniture, on-site technical support for a variety of multimedia equipment, basic maintenance of all meeting equipment and to ensure proper security and handling of audio visual equipment. Other duties as assigned.

Educational Value

This position will teach advanced customer service skills and expand technical knowledge of the candidate. Team members work within a fast-paced and dynamic conference services group to develop technical troubleshooting skills and real-world customer service skills. Opportunity for advancement to Manager positions for the right candidates.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate is a currently enrolled Work-Study UM student with a desire to acquire new skills. Dependability and punctuality are required. Must be able to lift setup equipment up to 40 lbs. as well as bend, stoop, crouch and stand to perform essential job functions.

Previous experience with audio visual equipment (projectors, microphones, laptops) is preferred. Willingness to do miscellaneous tasks is required, along with the ability to work independently as well as cohesively within a team.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, flexible with scheduling, and has strong customer service experience. A flexible schedule is required. Preference is given to candidates with early morning & afternoon availability including weekends. Position offers flexible scheduling around student schedules and will vary from week to week. Advancement opportunities to student manger positions for the right candidates.
