Job Description

University Unions is an organizational unit within Student Life that offers services, programs, spaces, and student involvement opportunities within the Michigan League, Michigan Union, and Pierpont Commons.

This position falls under the department of UU Operations. UU Operations serves as a liaison between all departments and guests that utilize UU facilities and makes sure needs are being met in the areas of building management such as custodial services, maintenance issues, key and mcard access, event setup, safety and security and beyond.

Student Building Managers (Program Staff II) serve as the manager-on-duty for the  building and are responsible for:

  • Opening and closing the facility/office

  • Meeting clients and monitoring events, including providing assistance with event setup, teardown, and AV equipment.

  • Managing onsite facility and client needs, conflicts and issues.

  • Monitoring safety and security of the facility by conducting rounds, responding to issues, and completing reports.

  • Identifying and resolving immediate operational issues within the facility

  • Modeling appropriate behavior and providing leadership to other student staff members.

  • Enacting emergency procedures when necessary (such as building evacuations or handling medical emergencies).

  • Being knowledgeable of the building layout 

  • Staying in tune with events & facility usage during your shift.

  • Fostering communication amongst student employees and staff.

  • Creating a friendly atmosphere for students, staff, and guests by building positive working relationships.

  • Demonstrating exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Delivering exemplary customer service to all guests of University Unions through a variety of forms of interaction

  • Cultivating an accessible, safe, and inclusive environment for all students, visitors, and guests within University Unions facilities, services, and programs

  • Being flexible and handling varying situations with confidence and leadership.

Job Requirements

Commitment to availability during nights, weekends, some holidays required. Previous event and/or audio visual experience desired. Customer service experience desired. Leadership/supervisory experience desired.

Ability to move/transfer objects weighing up to 50 lbs. with assistance (using a cart, etc.)/up to 30 lbs. without assistance.

Attend required student employee staff development meetings/programs/training. i.e. UU New Employee Kick-Off; DEI Basics 1 & 2; Responsible Employee/ Sexual Misconduct; Run, Hide, Fight Wear protective safety equipment, including (at a minimum) closed-toed shoes and belted pants.
