Job Description

University Unions (UU) is an organizational unit within Student Life that offers services, programs, spaces, and student involvement opportunities within the Michigan League, Michigan Union, and Pierpont Commons.

This position falls under the department of UU Operations. UU Operations serves as a liaison between all departments and guests that utilize UU facilities and makes sure needs are being met in the areas of building management such as custodial services, maintenance issues, key and mcard access, event setup, safety and security and beyond.

Students in the Event Setup staff (Program Staff) position are expected to:

  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Deliver exemplary customer service to all guests of University Unions through a variety of forms of interaction
  • Cultivate an accessible, safe, and inclusive environment for all students, visitors, and guests within University Unions facilities, services, and programs

More specifically, the Event Setup staff works as a team to prepare event spaces for use by contracted clients and are responsible for:

  • Completing all daily event setups, technical requirements, furniture, equipment, etc.
  • Inspecting all equipment for proper functioning before setting up in a meeting room and communicating any damage to the Manager on Duty
  • Maintaining orderly appearance in all storage areas and conducting regular inventory of setup equipment.
  • Ensuring the safety and security of facility, furnishings, equipment, guests, and employees.
  • Relaying outstanding/pending items to replacement shift prior to being relieved;

There are positions available at both the Michigan Union and the Michigan League.

You will improve your knowledge of event planning, facilities, and AV equipment while gaining appreciation and insight into the care and maintenance of historical buildings. There is potential for moving to a leadership role with continued employment within UU Operations.

Job Requirements
  • Willing to work evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to consistently lift 30lbs and push/pull 50lbs.
  • Attend required student employee staff development meetings/programs/training. i.e. UU New Employee Kick-Off; DEI Basics 1 & 2; Responsible Employee/ Sexual Misconduct; Run, Hide, Fight
  • Wear protective safety equipment, including (at a minimum) closed-toed shoes and belted pants.
