ELI 994 Program Assistant - Winter Semester 2025

This job posting is only for University of Michigan undergraduates.

The English Language Institute is recruiting undergraduate students for paid consulting positions in a GSI teaching preparation course for graduate students who speak English as an additional language.

What will you do?

  • Participate in practice office hours and teaching sessions, as you would for a regular class

  • Give feedback to prospective GSIs on the quality of their instruction in terms of language use and lesson delivery

 

What will you gain?

  • Experience providing appropriate constructive feedback in a multi-cultural setting

  • Experience working with multilingual speakers from a variety of countries and LSA disciplines

What qualifications do you need?

Experience in LSA undergraduate courses

Excellent time management skills

Ability to offer clear, concise feedback in both written and oral form

Educational Value

·        Program assistants will also sharpen their intercultural communication skills and their ability to offer constructive feedback and to interact in a multilingual environment. They will develop their ability to provide and receive professional feedback. Program assistants will interact with graduate students from a variety of non-English speaking countries and gain intercultural experience.

 
Job Requirements

Ideal Candidates will:

  • be currently enrolled as a UM undergraduate

  • have experience in LSA undergraduate courses (especially Chemistry, Physics, Math, Statistics, and EEB)

  • have an interest in quality teaching;

  • be available for all training and practice teaching sessions;

  • be punctual;

  • have excellent English written and oral communication skills; and

  • have some experience studying or traveling abroad (helpful but not required)

Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work during all course sessions, to candidates with prior successful performance in ELI 994 or other ELI courses, to candidates with evident motivation to participate constructively in the course, to candidates who contribute to a diverse array of academic backgrounds (particularly quantitative and/or science majors), to candidates with international experience, and to candidates with prior teaching or tutoring experience.

Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
