Job Description

This position will require the student to assist in various laboratory duties with the primary goal of investigating the role of adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) in the inflammatory response involved in obesity-linked diseases. To this end, the student will design Cell-Forming Units (CFUs), perform glucose tolerance tests, feed mice with appropriate diets, weigh mice and specific tissues, analyze cell counts, and extract bone marrow cells. The student will also gain proficiency in ELISA, RNA preparation followed by RT-PCR, flow cytometry, and quantative analysis through ANOVA and independent t-tests.

Educational Value

This position will allow the student to become familiar in a laboratory setting while specifically investigating the mechanisms underlying the sexually dimorphic inflammatory responses in obese animals. The student will be able to apply the basic science research theory and bench lab techniques in a practical setting by working with research faculty and professional staff.

Job Requirements

Current student of basic science disciplines. Additional skills that are necessary: mouse handling experience, ability to perform routine activities in the lab including making basic solutions, autoclaving, washing dishes, and managing research waste and trash.
