Job Description

Open to all U-M students | No physics background required
Are you creative, curious, and detail-oriented? Do you enjoy writing, organizing digital content, and engaging with audiences online? Join the Physics Department’s Communications team and help tell the story of one of U-M’s most dynamic academic communities.

In this role, you’ll support a range of communications efforts that include:

  • Creating and scheduling social media content
  • Preparing and publishing weekly physics seminar listings
  • Writing, proofreading, and editing student news stories
  • Updating the Physics website as necessary
  • Assisting with the Saturday Morning Physics program
  • Drafting and assembling thank-you letters for donors

You will also help with event support and special projects, which may include coordinating with caterers, distributing flyers, supporting technology initiatives, and handling general office tasks.

This position reports to Carol Rabuck, Communications and Advancement Manager for the Department of Physics. To effectively support departmental projects and events, the role is primarily in-person, with possibly some flexibility for remote work.

We’re looking for a candidate who:

  • Can commit to 10 hours per week (with optional 4-5 additional hours for Saturday Morning Physics on select weekends during fall and winter terms)
  • Possesses strong writing skills and/or experience with social media platforms.
  • Has experience with Canva and a web editing tool.
  • Can work independently, manage time effectively, and juggle multiple tasks
  • Is curious and open to learning new tools—we’ll train the right candidate!

Bonus skills (not required, but great to have):

  • Familiarity with HTML
  • Photoshop or Illustrator
  • Experience in promoting events/initiatives through platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter).
Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
Hours 10.0 to 15.0 hours per week
