The ideal tutor is personable, positive, autonomous, and focused on assisting student-athletes with achieving their academic objectives while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Academic Tutors may be exposed to sensitive information, and therefore all work with student-athletes is highly confidential. Academic Tutors may be required to communicate with other members of the Academic Success Program and Athletic Department staff.

The Academic Success Program is looking for tutors who are excited to work with diverse learners as they pursue their degrees while balancing education and athletics. Tutors focus on clarifying and explaining the content of a student’s course material while also helping students develop study skills to succeed on their own. Teaching/tutoring experience and/or experience within an educational setting is preferred but not required. It is mandatory that all tutors function within the rules and regulations defined by the NCAA and Big 10. These rules and regulations will be presented to new and returning tutors in a comprehensive orientation each semester.

  • Follow professional code of conduct and adhere to all NCAA and Big 10 rules.
  • Complete all required online and in-person tutor training prior to working with student athletes, and attend tutor training.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and abide by all ASP rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and abide by all applicable NCAA and Big 10 compliance rules and regulations.
  • Keep all information about student-athletes strictly confidential.

Schedule

Academic Tutors work on-call and intermittently based on the needs of the student-athlete. Rate

Compensation starts at $18.00 per hour and is based on experience and education.

Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance  of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks will be performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Educational Value

Academic Tutors gain experience in both teaching and tutoring. Tutoring for ASP provides employees the opportunity to gain valuable experience interacting with their peers in mainly 1-on-1 educational settings. In these tutoring sessions, tutors get the chance to improve their own understanding of their own course material by teaching this material to their assigned students. Tutors will have the opportunity to tutor a wide array of courses that allows them to practice teaching and relearning the fundamental aspects of their specific course of study. Tutors who are interested in teaching in the future get the opportunity to interact with students in group settings that mimic the classroom environment through our drop-in tutoring and exam review sessions.
