Job Description

University Unions is an organizational unit within Student Life, which offers services, programs, spaces, and student involvement opportunities within the Michigan League, Michigan Union, and Pierpont Commons.  This position of student building manager is on north campus at the Pierpont Commons Student Union.  Required duties will include all facility operations and safety, event contact and set-up, AV set-up (projectors, audio, video and laptops), and student/vendor/guest interaction. Student building managers work as the facility liaison with the Pierpont Commons manager to ensure safety, facility upkeep is passed along to maintenance and work to prepare event spaces for use by contracted clients.

 

Student building managers serve as the manager-on-duty for Pierpont Commons and are responsible for:

  • Delivering exemplary customer service to all users of Pierpont Commons.

  • Completing all daily event setups, technical requirements, furniture, equipment, etc.

  • Opening and closing the building.

  • Resetting spaces after events/meetings.

  • Monitoring safety and security of Pierpont Commons by walking rounds, responding to issues, and completing reports.

  • Identifying and resolving immediate operations issues in the building.

  • Enacting emergency procedures when necessary (such as building evacuations or handling medical emergencies).

  • Maintaining orderly appearance in all storage areas

  • Creating a friendly atmosphere for students, staff and guests, by building positive working relationships.

  • Working with student workers to achieve a high level of customer service.

  • Managing onsite facility and customer problems, conflicts and issues.

  • Attending required student employee staff development meetings/programs/trainings.

 

Student building managers should have the ability to be flexible and handle varying situations with confidence and leadership.

 

Pierpont Commons Staff and Student Managers also assist in the Mcard operation at Pierpont Commons.

 

Reviewing of appliations will begin mid January, 2025. We are seeking to hire students who will want to work during their college carreer here at U of M including during the summer months.

Educational Value

This position will develop critical thinking, problem solving, and time management skills. You will be afforded the opportunity to gain supervisory experience and improve customer service skills while advancing knowledge of events and facility management.

Job Requirements

Must be a University of Michigan Student. General office protocol knowledge such as typing, Microsoft Office and Google Suite knowledge. Strong customer service and multitasking skills recommended. Knowledge of University of Michigan campus. Must be available for shifts weekdays and weekends with various hours between 7am - 10pm and occasionally later hours for special events and some holidays such as Labor Day.  Seeking individuals willing to work 8-20 hours per week and up to 35 hours in the summer, if you are selected to work during the summer. (Hours are not guaranteed at any time). Position offers flexible scheduling around student class schedules. Candidate will actively participate in self-assessment to determine Student Learning Outcomes. Applicant must be able to consistently lift 50lbs and push/pull 50lbs. Punctuality is vital in this position. Customer service and/or Audio Visual experience is a plus though not required as all equipment will be trained on site. 

 

Hourly Rate $17.00/hour
