Job Title: Academic Mentor Job Summary Academic Mentors report to the Academic Mentor Coordinator. The Academic Mentor Program is under Learning Services, a program situated within the Academic Success Program in Athletics. Academic Mentors meet with at-risk student-athletes on a variable basis to help them develop skills needed to be an independent learner. The ideal mentor is personable, positive, autonomous, and focused on assisting student-athletes with achieving their academic objectives while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Academic Mentors are exposed to sensitive information therefore all work with student-athletes is highly confidential. Academic Mentors effectively communicate with all Academic Counselors and the Learning Services Staff. Learning Services is looking for mentors who are excited to work with diverse learners who are pursuing their degree while balancing education and athletics. Mentors do not function as content tutors but rather generalists who facilitate a positive learning experience for student-athletes while holding them accountable. Teaching experience and/or experience within an educational setting is preferred but not required. It is mandatory that all mentors function within the rules and regulations defined by the NCAA and Big 10. Responsibilities - Work one-on-one with at-risk student-athletes within a structured program for academic support.
- Facilitate student understanding and independence in time management, note taking, and written and oral communication skills.
- Write daily session reports and student evaluations.
- Communicate with students, the Learning Services Staff, Academic Counselors, and administrators in an appropriate manner.
- Promptly respond to all telephone calls and emails from the Learning Services Staff and all other UM Athletic Department personnel.
- Follow professional code of conduct and adhere to all NCAA and Big 10 rules.
- Complete all required online and/or in-person mentor training prior to working with student-athletes, and attend mentor training. This includes program surveys and additional training materials throughout the semester.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and abide by all ASP Learning Services rules and regulations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and abide by all applicable NCAA and Big 10 compliance rules and regulations.
- Keep all information about student-athletes strictly confidential.
Required Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited postsecondary institution.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Personable, understanding, and patient.
- Ability and willingness to work with diverse populations of learners at various skill levels.
Schedule Academic Mentors work on-call and intermittently based on the needs of student-athletes. Mentoring is offered Monday-Thursday from 8am-10pm, Friday from 8am-5pm and Sunday from 2pm-6pm, and appointments may be booked any time during these hours. However, most mentor appointments are scheduled during the time periods of Monday through Thursday from 7pm-10pm and Sunday 2-6pm. Rate Compensation ranges from $20-$22/hour and is based on experience and education. Starting pay is determined based on educational level, experience teaching or mentoring and fit for the program. Background Screening The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.
