Job Description

Program Summary

The Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) offers a full-spectrum of conflict resolution pathways under the following programs: Adaptable Conflict Resolution, Informal Conflict Resolution for Alcohol and Other Drugs, and workshops. OSCR practices a predominantly peer-based facilitation model in all of our pathways, workshop facilitations, consultations, and intake meetings.

 

OSCR’s mission is to provide a variety of programs and services designed to support a safe, just and peaceful community by assisting in preventing and resolving conflicts between University students and other students or community members. OSCR staff members work in an open, collaborative environment. This position serves as a Student Conflict Resolution Facilitator.

 

Position Description 

The student facilitator position is an exciting way to support your campus community. We welcome both new/inexperienced and experienced facilitators to join our team. This is an opportunity to develop your facilitation skills, deepen your understanding of restorative justice and to join a community of undergrad and graduate students committed to teach peace, build trust and promote justice. 

 

The main student facilitator's responsibilities include meeting with students involved with incidents related to alcohol and other drugs as well as other conflicts, front desk responsibilities, facilitating workshops, and administrative case management.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Facilitate all types of ICR4AOD Meetings (Tier I, Tier II, Tier II+), all types of agreed-upon ACR Pathways (Conflict Coaching, Mediation, Facilitated Dialogue, circle processes, Shuttle Negotiation) and intake meetings with people interested in OSCR conflict resolution services

  • Utilize conduct management software to complete administrative case management

  • Manage the front desk, greet people warmly, communicate via phone and email

  • Co-facilitate ~2 workshops per semester

    • This includes co-creating the agenda and co-facilitating the workshop with another trained facilitator.

    • Workshops are held during all hours of the day. There is usually high demand for evenings and weekends. Facilitators sign up for workshops based on their availability and can work with their supervisor to adjust their weekly hours accordingly. 

  • Attend one required weekly in-service meeting and one weekly 1:1 with your supervisor throughout the semester. 

    • These meetings are for facilitators to practice facilitation skills, reflect and dialogue about case work, learn new skills and strengthen the OSCR team. 

    • You will be required to facilitate at least one in-service on a topic of your choice during your duration as an OSCR facilitator

  • Attend required in-person training 9-5pm on August 18th-22nd, 2025

  • Represent OSCR at campus outreach events

  • Serve as Campus Security Authorities and Individuals with Reporting Obligations

  • Maintain the integrity of students' confidential records, in accordance with FERPA and University policy

  • Work individually and collaboratively to identify and complete projects related to achievement of departmental goals

Educational Value
  • Facilitators will build listening, inquiry and public speaking skills

  • Facilitators will have an increased understanding of justice structures, restorative justice, due process, and more. 

  • Facilitators will gain conflict resolution experience that is applicable to leadership positions and interpersonal relationships.

  • Facilitators will receive training and regular practice in Motivational Interviewing.

  • Experience designing, planning, and implementing events, workshops, projects, etc.

Job Requirements

Requirements

  • Must be in current good academic standing 

  • Must have availability to maintain 10-15 hours weekly between 9 am and 5 pm

  • Must be available for all required components (August training week, weekly in-service meetings)

  • Must be able to attend in-person training Aug 18 to Aug 22 2025

  • Must have blocks of availability some weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends to facilitate workshops

  • Must be a current/enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Michigan 

  • Operate in a hybrid work environment

    • At least 60% of your hours/shifts will be in-person

    • The first three weeks of the school year will be completely in person

  • Strong commitment to empathy, building community, and addressing harm

  • Willing to be vulnerable and step outside comfort zone

  • Excellent organization & time management skills, attention to detail, reliable, self-motivated, and can meet deadlines

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Can work independently and in a team environment with other students and staff 

  • Preferred: experience with teaching, training, facilitation, peer mediation, case management, and mentoring experience 

  • An ideal candidate will see this as a way to fulfill their passion for people-centered work
