Job Description

What Faculty Bibliography Research Assistants Do:

•Perform research and monitor database alerts and email to identify publications written by UM Law School faculty.
•Enter and update faculty scholarship in the Publications database and update former faculty profiles on the Faculty Bibliography LibGuide.
•Populate batch upload spreadsheets for the Law School Scholarship Repository.
•Locate or scan in PDF copies of items approved to load in the repository
•Perform basic accessibility-related enhancements to PDFs
•May assist with ongoing enhancements to the Publications database, repository, and the Faculty Bibliography site to improve consistency, discoverability, accessibility, and usability.

Educational Value

What Faculty Bibliography Research Assistants Get:

  • Training from the supervising librarian.
  • A broad understanding of the scope of scholarly communication.
  • Experience creating and maintaining standardized bibliographic metadata.
  • Applied knowledge of scholarly publishing workflows and the role of libraries in disseminating scholarly output.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access, LibGuides, Adobe PDF tools, and other tools and platforms.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Students must be currently enrolled.
  • The ability to work 10-12 hours per week in the fall/winter.
  • Willingness to work both independently and collaboratively with supervising librarian.
  • Experience with word processing in Microsoft Word and Google Docs
  • Experience with basic data management and processing in Excel for small or large datasets

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with citation management software, and/or Microsoft Access.
  • Ability to edit PDFs in Adobe Acrobat, including through the Combine Files, Organize Pages, and Redaction tools.
  • Ability to sort and/or filter data in Excel, including through conditional formatting
  • Experience searching academic databases, including by using advanced search fields
  • Familiarity with legal materials and databases is an asset
  • This position is work-study eligible and applicants with work-study are preferred.
  • Graduate students from the School of Information are preferred
