Job Description

Students in astronomy 101, 102, and 201 have the opportunity to use the Angell Hall Student Observatory during the semester. We hire undergraduates to help the GSIs by running several telescopes. Telescope operators must be able to point the telescope at an appropriate object and explain to the students how the telescope works and what they are looking at.

Develop communication skills working with faculty and students, further develop technical skills and acquire experience working in an observatory environment.

Job Requirements
  • Must have passed at least 3 credits of astronomy here at UM, or an equivalent university-level course.
  • Must NOT be currently enrolled in Astro 101, 102, or 201
  • People with previous experience with small telescopes or trained on the 0.4-m DFM are preferred.
  • Must be willing to work outside and after dark.  

Observing nights are scheduled for the first clear Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday each week and are cancelled in the event of inclement weather. Times vary depending on sunset. Clear evenings are usually 2 - 2.5 hours: 1.5 hours of observing plus time for set up and shut down. Set up begins at 8 early in the semester, 7 PM later in the semester.
