Job Description

Michigan Medicine's Infection Prevention & Epidemiology (IPE) Department is looking to fill temporary, part-time hand hygiene observer positions. 

Hand Hygiene Observers responsibilities:

  • Observing and collecting hand hygiene (HH) compliance data according to the HH Program standards and expectations from inpatient and procedural areas.
  • Remaining up-to-date with changes in HH data collection methods and audit needs. 
  • Attending monthly check-ins with the HH Program leads
  • Functioning as a personal protective equiptment (PPE) auditor collecting staff compliance with wearing PPE according to the health system's transmission-based isolation/precautions standards. 
  • Training other HH observers on an as needed basis.
  • There is also the possibility of performing observations at ambulatory sites as well which may not be located on the main medical campus (off-site). 

Minimum hours per week required: 8 (up to 29 per availability)

Work hours: Self-scheduled. The hospitals are open 24/7. It is the individual observer's responsibility to work at least 8 hours per week.

Work locations: Varies among University Hospital, Frankel Cardiovascular Center, Mott Children's Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, Kahn Health Care Pavilion, Rogel Cancer Center

Educational Value

The Hand Hygiene Observer role provides students the opportunity to become familiar with various healthcare settings from general inpatient units to intensive care units, and potentially the procedural areas such as the operating rooms and cath lab. Students will also become familiar with hand hygiene and personal protective equiptment (PPE) standards and processes for patients requiring isolation/precautions for certain communicable diseases while in a healthcare setting.  Students trained to be an observer will develop an understanding of un-biased data collection methodologies. 

Job Requirements

Required qualifications

An ideal candidate for this position would have experience working or volunteering in a hospital or similar healthcare setting.

Must be able to: 

  • remain focused on observing hand hygiene and PPE compliance data
  • quickly pick-up on the details involved with hand hygiene and PPE use
  • submit collected data in a timely manner (within 24 hours after collection; exceptions may be allowed if arranged prior with supervisor)
  • work at least 8 hours per week consistently
  • check and respond in a timely manner to e-mails
  • stand/walk for extended periods of time
  • adhere to insitutional policies and practices relevant to the position

Desired (not required) qualifications

  • Hospital infection control/disease transmission knowledge
  • Public health/microbiology background
  • The position may occasionally involve speaking with hospital staff (e.g., physicians, nurses, environmental services, PFANS, etc.), and applicants should be comfortable being approached and engaged by others. 

 

Pre-Health, Nursing, Kinesiolgy/IONM, SPH and/or CHIP students are encouraged to apply.
