Job Description

The Department of Human Genetics is seeking to hire a work-study student to serve in our front office to help out with various general office support activities, event set-up/clean-up, imaging purchasing documentation, alumni database maintenance, and calendar of events update.

 

Applicants should submit a resume and a short description about how their skills and experience directly relate to the responsibilities for this position.  Applicants must be available  Wednesdays 11:15am - 1:30pm. Other hours are negotiable, based on course schedule.The selected temporary student would work 15 hours per week at $15-$16 per hour, depending upon prior experience.

 

Individuals working in this positions will functionally report to the Executive Assistant to the Chair and administratively report to the Administrative Manager for the Department.  Questions about this position can be directed to halseyr@med.umich.edu.

 

     General Office Support Responsibilities:

  • Clean refrigerators and microwaves
  • Assist with general requests from faculty, staff, and students
  • Other duties as assigned

Event Support:

  • Set-up and clean-up from meetings or lectures, such as seminar speaker visits and WeST

 

Purchasing Support:

  • Imaging of purchase documentation for record retention

 

Marketing and Communications Support

  • Update our calendar of events as directed
  • Assist with updating our alumni database as directed
Educational Value

Students seeking a professional work experience would benefit from this position, as would students who are seeking a field in genetics research.

  • Students will gain skills learning how to work in a professional office environment and about some aspects of an academic department’s administrative structure
Job Requirements

 

Applicants must be available Wednesdays 11:15am - 1:30pm.  Other hours are negotiable, based on course schedule.

  • Prior work experience working in an office setting is required
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills both verbally and via email
  • Ability to work on repetative tasks without issue
  • Ability to work professionally with visitors, staff, students, and faculty
  • Ability to work professionally with individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • Ability to complete work despite frequent interruptions
  • Business casual attire
Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
Hours 15.0 to 16.0 hours per week
