Job Description

This position will work 6-15 hours per week. 

Prepare media and solutions for isolating novel bacteria from ocean core samples. Work on isolating the new bacteria, doing fermentations, and preserving the bacteria. Large-scale fermentation and bioassay guided fractionation will also be conducted in the search for new drug-like molecules isolated from microbes isolated from ocean sediments.

Educational Value

The student will be an active member of the research group. The student will work on various tasks and develop important job-related skills. They will gain firsthand experience learning microbiological techniques, gaining an appreciation for what exists in the environment that can be medically useful, and getting a feel for a laboratory environment with many opportunities for interaction with other undergraduates/graduate students, staff, and possibly post-docs.

Job Requirements

Introductory biology and chemistry, a microbiology course is a plus. You need to follow directions and not be afraid to ask questions. Attention to detail and accurate record-keeping are a must.
