Job Description

The Edward Ginsberg Center is seeking undergraduate and graduate work-study eligible students to serve as literacy tutors through the America Reads program. America Reads is a national work-study program that employs undergraduate and graduate students who serve as literacy tutors to elementary students in Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Ypsilanti schools. Our mission is to have all children reading well and independently by the end of third grade, and the Ginsberg Center provides tutors with training and resources to achieve this goal.   • Please note: This position is specifically after school in Detroit on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays with work times from 4-6pm. 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Working in person with elementary students in Southeastern Michigan schools twice a week to develop their literacy skills and instill a love of reading and writing. 

  • Developing engaging tutoring lessons which build their tutees’ literacy skills and support their comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, fluency, and motivation to read.

  • Advancing skills in educating young students and expanding their understanding of educational systems in the State of Michigan through regular training and seminars led by graduate students and professionals in the education field.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Work-study award for the 2026-2027 academic year.

  • Eagerness to work with and support young students in literacy efforts.

  • The ability to guide conversations with students and peers so that they are informative and constructive and to know how to keep things on track.

  • The ability to effectively change lesson plans on the fly to keep tutoring sessions efficient and meaningful.

  • The ability to recognize the investment that America Reads staff, teachers, and community partners are making in the program and treat the position with the honor and respect it deserves. 

  • An interest in building relationships with the students, teachers, families, and schools we work with. 

  • An inclusive attitude that values the diverse racial, ethnic, economic, and religious traits of others.

  • Hours: 5-10 hours per week

  • Compensation: $17 per hour for undergraduate students & $19 per hour for graduate students.
