Who we’re looking for:The University of Michigan Library Shapiro Design Lab (SDL) is seeking Design Lab interns for the 2025-26 academic year. Interns directly support the operational, technical, and consultation activities of the Design Lab, which includes the Media Production Rooms and Workshop resource. The intern role also includes participation in the broader learning communities of the Design Lab and helping to grow the Lab spaces with their own ideas and passions. Interns do not need to know everything in the lab. Curiosity, enthusiasm, a desire to help others learn, and a passion for making are essential for success in the role. What You’ll Do:Work 8-12 hours per week at $16/hour Daily maintenance and operations of Design Lab spaces and equipment (cleaning, organizing, basic equipment maintenance, and documentation) Provide peer consultation and instruction to Design Lab users and community members Technical support for applications and hardware, including but not limited to audio/video production and editing, 3d modeling/sculpting, graphic design, simulation Systems and process documentation, design, and improvement Research and development of physical and software tools, training resources, and job aids Assist with the completion of Design Lab Projects with campus and outside partners Regularly engage with Lab colleagues via monthly staff meetings (community nights) Write an end-of-year summary about your experience working in the Design Lab Explore and develop your own interests and talents as part of the learning community

Educational Value |
Educational value of this position: Design Lab interns model and support interdisciplinary scholarship and creative practice in the Library’s Shapiro Design Lab. This role is an opportunity to develop creativity, responsibility and engage in learning in collaboration with peers, librarians and faculty members representing diverse disciplines. Interns will develop new skills and have opportunities to learn about emerging tools and processes in maker and media technology. While honing essential job skills of communication, operations, organization, and customer service. Interns provide expertise in relevant fields; initiate projects that utilize library resources in innovative ways and/or advance the Design Labs’ goals. Interns development and maintain a cultural climate that is connected to Michigan academic communities, open to diverse ideas, and perpetually evolving in response to community participation. |
Job Requirements |
Qualifications:Experience, aptitude, or interest in using maker and fabrication technologies (ie. textile Arts, digital fabrication, rapid prototyping tools, circuits, a/v production, etc.) Dependable and timely communication across multiple media Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and work independently Ability and desire to work both collaboratively and cooperatively in the service of building a learning community in the Shapiro Design Lab Interest in collaborating with individuals from a diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and viewpoints Passion for and alignment with the Design Lab’s principles Ability to respond to changing needs within a project and with the Design Lab overall, given its exploratory and experimental character
