Job Description

English Language Institute - Summer EAP Program Assistant

 

The English Language Institute (ELI) seeks one or more outgoing, energetic, organized, and dependable U-M students with strong interpersonal and computer skills to support ELI’s Summer EAP (English for Academic Purposes) intensive program for newly-admitted U-M international graduate students. You can learn more about the ELI here: lsa.umich.edu/eli

 

Summer EAP Assistants will support ELI faculty and staff in the planning and implementation of this dynamic, engaged program. In this role, you will:

 

  1. Help plan and carry out fun and engaging social events that assist students in learning about the U-M campus, Ann Arbor, and Michigan.  Past events have included a campus scavenger hunt, tours of Michigan Stadium and U-M’s Detroit Observatory, an all-day tour of Detroit, and a contra dance.  

  2. Plan and facilitate informal conversation opportunities for program participants on a weekly basis.

  3. Serve as a friendly and welcoming point of contact at the ELI’s front desk for Summer EAP students when they have general questions about their courses, U-M, and Ann Arbor. 

  4. Provide program and office support, such as stocking supplies, setting up events, answering and transferring phone calls, and other light office tasks as needed.

  1. Working with a team on project and program management

  2. Planning and leading social and cultural events and other programming for international graduate and professional students

  3. Facilitating small group discussions and networking

  4. Producing effective professional written and verbal communication

 

You will also develop your intercultural skills and have the opportunity to build your network with international graduate students from around the world.

 
 
Job Requirements

Successful candidates will be outgoing, energetic, organized, and dependable individuals with strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

 

Required qualifications include:

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills

  • Attention to detail and ability to stay organized in a dynamic environment

  • Comfort using basic computer software and web platforms, such as Google Suite programs and Microsoft Office

  • Familiarity with Slack and social media such as Instagram and LinkedIn

 

Desired qualifications: 

  • Event planning experience

  • International/intercultural experience, familiarity with other languages and cultures, and/or speaking a second or third language

 

To be considered, candidates must be available to work in-person on U-M Ann Arbor’s Central Campus:

 

June 22 - July 2: Pre-program planning (6-8 hours/week)

July 6 - August 12: Program runs (8-10 hours/week)

 

Most work will take place M-F 9am-5pm, with one or two evenings required. 

Program events take place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, and Fridays for the duration of the program. There is a possibility that the students hired for this position might continue as a Student Staff member in the ELI during the next academic year.
