Job Description

The Pathways to Public Health Program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health aims, in part, to expand access to a public health education, particularly for those traditionally underrepresented in the field. Fostering a diverse student body, and ultimately a diverse public health workforce, is vital to eliminating health disparities and achieving health equity. As such, our school is committed to making a public health education accessible to anyone who wants to help respond to the world’s toughest public health challenges. 

Michigan Summer Academy for Public Health Immersion, Research, and Exploration (M-SAPHIRE) is the grade 9-12 program under the Pathways to Public Health office at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. M-SAPHIRE serves to expose pre-college students to public health as a profession. Pathways to Public Health M-SAPHIRE is seeking an engaging, reliable, organized, proactive, and team-oriented individual to serve in a key seasonal role with emphasis on academic and event support for 4 weeks in summer 2024.

The Opportunity

Program Assistants are responsible for assisting with the implementation of M-SAPHIRE instructional and experiential activities. Program assistants need to be flexible and willing to adapt to unique challenges, accepting tasks as they arise. Program Assistants play a key role in supporting M-SAPHIRE program, specifically by supporting the program, leadership, and participant needs. 

The Work

  1. Attend staff onboarding and staff meetings.

  2. Participate in the implementation of the following M-SAPHIRE Activities:

    1. M-SAPHIRE Family Orientation.

    2. Experiential activities with the participants during the program.

    3. Assist with the creation of program close video.

  3. Attend all instructional sessions for M-SAPHIRE and assist the instructor during class as needed.

  4. Lead, engage and coach a small cohort of pre-college students as they complete academic tasks.

  5. Maintaining attendance & participation records.

  6. Assist with emergency situations involving participants.

  7. Responsible for supervising youth in compliance with U-M Children on campus guidelines.

  8. Contribute to end of program reporting.

  9. Other tasks as assigned by the Program Director and/or Program Manager

Supervision Received

Program Assistant(s) are directly supervised by the Pathways to Public Health Program Manager.

Terms of Employment

June 26 - July 28 ~20-30 hours per week

  • You are expected to work 4 hours per day: June 24-28, July 1, July 2

  • You are expected to work 6 hours per day: July 8-24

    • You will be entitled to two 15-minute breaks (1 Morning, 1 Afternoon)

    • Lunch at Mosher Jordan Hall is included in your hourly rate

  • You are expected to work 2 hours per day: July 25 and July 26

  • There will be no work on July 3-July 5

Educational Value

  2. Experience with academic support in Public Health related field

  3. Contribute to the long-term diversification of the Public Health field

Job Requirements

The Person

  1. Must have a high level of competency in the course being facilitated as demonstrated by grades in related college coursework.

  2. Availability to work on site during the day - typically 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, Mon.-Fri.

  3. Demonstrates leadership, planning, and organizational skills.

  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  5. Must be reliable, adaptable and conscientious in the performance of duty.

  6. Commitment to the mission of Pathways to Public Health. 

  7. (Preferred) Current University of Michigan student or recent alumni.

  8. (Preferred) Currently majoring in public health, but pre-health, pre-med, sociology, psychology, a STEM field, or education field will also be considered.

  9. (Preferred) Current drivers license / ability to operate a motor vehicle
