Job Description

Graduate Assistant Role Overview: 

The Edward Ginsberg Center is seeking an experienced student enrolled in a graduate program to provide support for the Center’s America Reads program. America Reads is a national work-study program that employs undergraduate and graduate students who serve as literacy tutors to elementary students in Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Ypsilanti schools. Our mission is to have all children reading proficiently and independently by the end of third grade, and the Ginsberg Center provides tutors with training and resources to achieve this goal. Creativity and positivity are key components of our professional team, along with a strong commitment to literacy education. We have two positions available that would support America Reads programming starting in the spring of 2026 and continuing through the summer and into the following (2026-2027) academic year. 

This is a hybrid, 8-10 hour position with consistent, daytime hours. This graduate assistant position will be responsible for the following:

  • Coordinating Tutor Schedules 

    • Helping build tutor schedules

  • Support Program Broadly 

    • Examples of this include coordinating and communication between America Reads manager, students, and community partners;

    • Assist with interviewing student applications 

  • Leadership and Engagement Coordinator

    • Work directly with team leads to build a learning community

    • Work collaboratively with America Reads Manager to provide oversight to the Team Lead program; this includes preparing curriculum materials, supporting team leads with programming resources, occasionally holding office hours for team leads and tutors, and supporting team lead coordination of site supervision 

  • Trainings

    • Collaborate to prepare and present at tutor training events. 

    • Bridge training and reflective work by facilitating social justice-themed workshops and events. 

  • Reflection Journals

    • Research and prepare resources relevant to tutor work

    • Create journal prompts

    • Post journals via Canvas

    • Support discussion groups

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Work-study award for the 2025-2026 academic year.

  • Eagerness to work with and support young students in literacy efforts.

  • The ability to guide conversations with students and peers so that they are informative and constructive.

  • An interest in building relationships with the students, teachers, families, and schools we work with. 

  • An inclusive attitude that values the diverse racial, ethnic, economic, and religious traits of others.

  • Self-driven and interested in serving both as a leader and creative thought partner in the development of the America Reads program. 

  • Compensation:

    • $18/hr - masters

    • $20/hr - PhD

Hourly Rate $18.00/hour to $20.00/hour
