Job Description

The CSE Undergraduate Advising Office (UAO) is looking for 1 knowledgeable declared major to begin training as a Peer Advisor during the Winter 2025 term and continuing at least through the following Fall 2025 semester. Only CS-Eng, CS-LSA, CE, and DS-Eng majors are eligible. Training will begin upon hire in WN25. Pay: $15/hr., 6-8 hours per week (schedule to be determined once hired). Open to work study and non-work study students.

 

Job description overview:
 

The CSE Peer Advisor (PA) works primarily from the CSE Undergraduate Advising Office in 2808 Beyster (a mix of in-person and remote work will be available) assisting new and continuing students with academic decision-making. The PA offers advice regarding course planning, research opportunities, and student involvement from an undergraduate’s perspective. PAs also assist in department events, such as student panels and major fairs, and meet with prospective student families.
 

The PA will be expected to:
 

  • Answer student questions regarding Engineering/LSA and EECS rules and policies (including knowledge of important dates, course and instructor information, and appropriate resource referrals) via email, Piazza, in-person, and virtual settings

  • Conduct appointments with prospective students and their families

  • Assist students with questions about the registration process

  • Offer advice based on personal experiences with EECS coursework

  • Participate in events as needed throughout the academic year, representing the UAO at Campus Days, majors fairs, etc.

 

  • Maintain a welcoming presence to ensure students and other visitors encounter a comfortable environment while waiting for appointments or assistance

  • Cover drop-in questions and triage traffic coming through the office 

  • Host and market declaration celebration events for T-shirt distribution

  • Friendly and approachable when sharing knowledge about the EECS programs and U-M in general

  • Demonstrates professionalism, high reliability, and commitment to the position

  • Involvement in extracurricular activities, clubs, or organizations

  • Experience with and/or understanding of confidentiality and the proper handling of sensitive material

  • Interest/experience in assisting with student-facing communications, including Instagram, email, Piazza, Canva, and other platforms like social media.

  • Declared CS-LSA, CS-Eng, CE, or DS-Eng major student in their second year or higher
