Job Description

The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI) seeks candidates for tutoring positions in the SuccessConnects program for the 2024- 2025 academic school year.

We are currently seeking tutors for the following: 

  • CHEM/BIOCHEM

  • BIO 171

  • MATH 105,115

  • PHYSICS (100-200 levels)

Essential Functions (Responsibilities):

Tutoring: Provide individualized academic support to students by helping them review and learn concepts to improve their academic performance.

Administrative Duties: Applicant must be able to follow through on the following administrative tasks as needed:

  • Filling out administrative forms, i.e., surveys, tutor admin forms, etc. (as needed)

  • Be communicative and fully responsive to communications sent by supervisors.

Training/Orientation: Required training/orientation sessions, which will take place before tutees can be assigned.

Educational Value

Education Value of position: Planning and development of academic content; ability to conduct needs assessments; increased awareness of campus support resources; ability to communicate and instruct; problem-solving; planning and coordination.

Job Requirements

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applicant(s) must be University of Michigan enrolled students who have demonstrated strong overall academic achievement, including a grade of B+ or higher in the course that they will be tutoring in, as well as those courses that have been completed at U-MAll courses tutored must have been taken for credit at U-M.

  • Applicants must be available and flexible to tutor one-on-one, preferably in person (with safety and health precautions in mind) and/or remotely (via an approved virtual platform such as Zoom)

  • Applicants must be available to tutor at least 4 hours per week dedicated to one-on-one tutoring.

  • Applicants must possess effective communication skills that allow them to explain difficult concepts.

  • Applicants must be able to provide subject-specific content feedback to ensure their tutees’s academic success.

  • Applicants must demonstrate the ability to appreciate, affirm, and support tutees and diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Applicant must be able to troubleshoot approaches to learning concepts in one-on-one tutoring.

  • Applicants must be able to utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress.

  • Applicant must be able to provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success.

  • Applicant must be able to use active listening strategies to allow the student to determine the content and pace of tutoring.

  • Applicants must be able to recognize the different learning styles and student preferences.

  • Applicants must be able to recognize their primary role in helping students become more confident, more successful, and self-directed learners.

  • Applicants must be able to create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.

  • Applicant must be able to make appropriate referrals to direct supervisor concerning other campus and community resources as needed.

Mandatory Attendended Events:

Your attendance for these events is mandatory and non-negotiable. We will not accept your application if you are not able to attend.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium

    • Location - Hill Auditorium

    • Date - January 20, 2025

    • Your work will mainly be helping as stagehands and supporting administration.

    • Must be available for either of two shifts:

      • 6 am-12 pm or 12 pm-4 pm

      • You will have the option to work all day, but that is not mandatory.

Professional Development:

  • Attend Professional Development (PD) meetings [maximum of once a month or twice a semester and PD sessions typically last an hour long (time of PD is TBD)].

  • Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills.

  • Utilize feedback from the ODEI Tutor Survey and reflection to improve tutoring abilities and student connections.

Meetings- Applicant must be able to organize and set time aside to attend the following:

  • Evening and Occasional Weekend Meetings

  • Attend 1-hour weekly meetings (Fall and Winter Semester)

  • Attend Orientation and Training 

  • (2) social meetings combined with group meetings (lasting a total of 1.5 hours per meeting) per semester.

  • (2) 1-on-1 check-ins (lasting no more than an hour per meeting) per semester with the supervisor to assess your progress and experience and to evaluate the program.

  • Weekly tutoring sessions with a minimum of four tutees per week.
