Job Description

The Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS) summer program is a program for high school students who are open to the challenges of higher mathematics and natural sciences. Michigan Math and Science Scholars attend summer courses at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, on topics of current mathematical and scientific research. The MMSS program is hiring a number of college students who will serve as COUNSELORS for the residential portion of the program. You are expected to work Thursday, June 19 - Saturday, August 2, 2025. THIS INCLUDES THE 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEKEND. Counselors will be paid a stipend of $4,000, paid biweekly over the course of the six-week employment period. They will also receive free room and board for the duration of their employment.

Residence Hall Counselors supervise the Michigan Math and Science Scholars participants during the non-academic hours of the program. This is a residential position based in a university residence hall. You will organize, facilitate, and execute group social activities in the evening hours every weekday and on the weekends. You will participate in field trips and chaperone students on group outings (MMSS will pay for your admission fees while doing so!). Most importantly, you will provide guidance to students, serving as a positive role model at all times for participants. The position requires weekend and evening participation. You will be expected to work from 4:30 pm until 8:30 am the following day, every weekday you work, and work all 24 hours of each weekend day. Sleeping is part of your "work schedule." Food and lodging are provided. You will have rotating days off.

You must be at least 19 years old by June 22, 2025 and have been out of high school for at least one year. While not required, ideal and preferred applicants will have previous relevant experience, understand the Ann Arbor area, be familiar with the University of Michigan, and be able to serve as positive role models for student participants. All applicants will undergo a background check.

NOTE: Students should apply here.  Applications submitted through the Student Employment Website will not be reviewed.

Educational Value

Staff will gain experience with the necessary processes to organize, facilitate, and execute group social activities/events. Because staff will chaperone students on group outings and provide guidance to students, they will gain experience with mentoring/coaching/etc.

Job Requirements

Must be available for all of the dates listed in the description above. Must be able to stay in the dorms with students (living expenses paid by program). This program focuses on Math and Science. It would be good if the students who would like counseling positions had knowledge of the STEM fields, but it is not required that they major in them.
