Job Description

Research Services Assistant. Special Collections Research Center Library.

Working under the general supervision of the Research Services Librarian, the Research Services Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of tasks associated with the day-to-day operations in the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) that includes, but is not limited to:

  • Greeting and registering researchers in the reading room

  • Monitoring the use of collection material (rare books and documents) in the reading room

  • Assisting with the fulfillment of duplication requests that entails scanning, editing, and electronic delivery of files

  • Physically moving materials through the process by retrieving, preparing books and document boxes for inter building transit, and reshelving collection materials.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Providing, research, project, and other support (i.e., shelf reading)

Educational Value of the Position:

Students will have the opportunity to learn and develop skill sets that are useful for library and archival professionals interested in providing reference services to the public. They will gain interpersonal skills by effectively communicating with patrons in-person and remotely. They will be exposed to the different types of technical tools that librarians and archivists employ to fulfill research and duplication requests. They will develop time management and organizational skills by assisting with the day-to-day workflow. They will have the opportunity to work with special collections professionals who can provide guidance and share their knowledge and expertise.

 
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Interested in working with the public in a customer service capacity

  • Excellent organizational, and oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task and shift priorities when needed

  • Sensitivity to, and aptitude for handling rare and fragile materials

  • Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new programs

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library or special collections (archives) environment and interacting with patrons

  • Familiarity with tools, trends, and best practices in libraries and archives in facilitating reference services

  • Familiarity with Google Workspace or Dropbox

Hourly Rate $15.00/hour
Hours 10.0 to 15.0 hours per week
Time Frame Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer
Start Date Monday, October 6, 2025
End Date May 2026 with option to continue thru the summer
