Job Description

Position Summary:

The Student Engagement Coordinators are undergraduate student employees that play a pivotal role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment within the Trotter Multicultural Center. This position focuses on cultivating hospitality, managing event logistics, facilitating programs, and providing support for front desk operations. The Coordinators are responsible for ensuring that all events and meetings run smoothly, spaces are appropriately set up and broken down, and programs effectively engage students from diverse backgrounds. This job requires a resume and cover letter.

 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cultivate Hospitality: Create a warm and inclusive atmosphere within the Trotter Multicultural Center, welcoming students and visitors from diverse backgrounds and upholding the core values of the center. Complete safety and maintenance rounds ensuring the facility is operating effectively and guests are conducting themselves according to the facilities usage policy.

2. Event Logistics: Complete the setup and breakdown of event and meeting spaces, ensuring they are conducive to productive gatherings and activities. Assist with audio/visual equipment in event spaces and problem-solve in an efficient and professional manner to resolve guest inquiries.

3. Program Facilitation: Support and facilitate programs and initiatives aimed at furthering the mission of the center while collaborating with student organizations and campus partners.

4. Front Desk Operations: Provide frontline support by managing inquiries, directing visitors, and maintaining a professional and welcoming presence at the front desk.

5. Student Engagement: Facilitate building tours detailing the history and legacy of the center. Engage students to help inform and develop strategies to actively engage students in Trotter Multicultural Center activities, workshops, and events, fostering a sense of belonging and community. Serve as an ambassador for TMC at select campus-wide events including orientations, parent/family/alumni weekend, and Heritage Month celebrations.

6. Facility Operations: Execute building opening and closing operations according to TMC policy and procedure. Learn, uphold, and enforce all campus and building safety policies and procedures. Be a good steward of the physical space and historical legacy of the center. Exercise sound judgment while acting on behalf of TMC.

7. Mission Driven: Demonstrate a commitment to furthering the mission of the Trotter Multicultural Center by learning and upholding the mission, vision, and core values. Advocate for initiatives within the Trotter Multicultural Center and across campus, promoting awareness and understanding of multicultural issues.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Understand and know the TMC mission and vision. Possess an understanding of, and appreciation for diversity, with a desire to explore cultural diversity. 

  • Ability to set priorities under time constraints and problem-solve effectively as issues arise

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with a variety of audiences via phone, email, and in-person

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs

  • Availability to work evenings, late nights, and weekends. Must be able to maintain a minimum of 12 hours/week and a maximum of 29 hours/week (this includes all other University of Michigan jobs).  

  • Applicants who are able to work for a full academic year, have previous event/programming experience (including support for audio/visual setup) are strongly preferred.

Hourly Rate $17.00/hour
