Job Description

Zero Waste Event Programs Assistant

The Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) serves as a focal point for sustainable campus operations. We are part of Planet Blue, a university-wide initiative to promote sustainable operations and engagement. You can learn more about our efforts at ocs.umich.edu. In this role you will primarily work with our Zero Waste Event Program, including (but not limited to) responsibilities such as: 

  • Responding to event support requests via email
  • Conducting zero waste trainings in person and over Zoom
  • Fulfilling compostable serviceware orders
  • Assisting at zero waste events by monitoring bins, answering questions, setting up signage & bins, and properly disposing of compost.
  • Assist with additional waste reduction efforts

Job Requirements
  • Ability to obtain MVR approval and drive university vehicle
  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse range of people of various social, cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and recording observations
  • Flexible evening and weekend availability required to work at zero waste events.
  • Position will include at least 1 in-office shift per week plus changing hours as needed to work at events and conduct trainings
  • Preferred:
    • Knowledge of sustainability, zero waste principles, and U-M sustainability goals and initiatives preferred.
    • Availability to staff large annual events including, but not limited to events on Sunday, August 24th and Saturday, October 4th.
Hourly Rate $17.00/hour to $19.00/hour
Hours 4.0 to 10.0 hours per week
