Title: Zero Waste Stadium Coordinator Background: U-M's sustainability goals include reducing overall waste and maximizing diverting waste from the landfill. To support these goals, in 2016 Athletics committed to striving toward zero waste game days at Michigan Stadium. Almost all material sold in Michigan Stadium is recyclable or compostable in fan-facing bins. However, success of the Zero Waste Stadium program relies on the proper placement of those items into the corresponding bin. In the 2025 season, the Zero Waste Stadium program will utilize volunteer groups to staff waste bins in high-traffic and priority areas. These volunteers, which may be U-M campus student groups or community groups, will aim to minimize contamination by monitoring bins and educating fans. The Zero Waste Stadium Coordinator position will be responsible for coordinating and training these volunteers. Additionally, at each home game the Zero Waste Stadium Educator team (OCS student staff) are responsible for providing zero waste education to concession staff. This includes visiting each concession area to provide educational materials and instruction on how to properly sort waste and answer Zero Waste Stadium questions. Responsibilities: The Zero Waste Stadium Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating gameday volunteer groups and assisting with overseeing the Zero Waste Stadium Educators student team. This will include recruiting and training volunteers before each home game of the 2025 football season. The Zero Waste Stadium Coordinator will also be responsible for noting, correcting, and reporting on any misplaced materials in waste bins and dumpsters around the stadium both during the game and clean up. The Coordinator position will assist with coordinating the Zero Waste Stadium Educator team in ensuring bins are properly located on the concourse. The Coordinator and the rest of the Zero Waste Educator Stadium team may also be responsible for assisting nearby tailgate waste reduction efforts, including U-M-sponsored zero waste tailgates. This includes assisting the tailgate event planners with bin monitoring, outreach, and education. |
