Job Description

In connection with the U-M Transfer Bridges to the Humanities program, the Sweetland Center for Writing seeks 5 graduate students with experience in writing instruction and/or tutoring to work 1-2 days per week in the writing centers at Schoolcraft Community College (1 available position - in person), Grand Rapids Community college (2 available positions - remote), and Henry Ford Community College (2 available positions - in person). Compensation is $25/hour, with the possibility of using a university car for the commute to Schoolcraft and Henry Ford College, or reimbursement for mileage if using personal means of transportation. lunch. 

At Schoolcraft, you will tutor undergraduate students taking English and first-year writing courses in the Writing Support Studio and work with the Studio director to assist in training undergraduate writing tutors. This position requires in-person availability.

At Grand Rapids, you will tutor undergraduate students in the Language Arts Tutorial Lab, many of whom seek support for their first-year composition and/or ESL writing classes. This position is remote and synchronous, so candidates need to be comfortable working in an autonomous environment that requires regular email communication with the supervisor.

At Henry Ford, you will provide one-on-one writing support to uundergraduate students in the Writing Center, many of whom are enrolled in English Composition and/or ESL writing classes. Candidates with experience working with multilingual writers are strongly encouraged to apply. This position requires in-person availability.  

Educational Value

These positions, which are central to U-M's goal of supporting transfer students from all backgrounds, give U-M graduate students valuable professional experience working in a community college setting, developing tutoring skills, and improving their understanding of Writing Center work and equity-focused teaching. These positions are also connected to Sweetland’s ongoing efforts in research and professional development. Hired graduate students will benefit from direct mentorship and, if interested, be able to brainstorm research opportunities with Sweetland faculty. 

Job Requirements

The positions at Schoolcraft and Grand Rapids do not require specialized training but do require social skills and dependability. Some background with tutoring writing and/or teaching writing (or another subject) is strongly encouraged. 

The positions at Henry Ford require social skills, dependability, and background with tutoring writing and/or teaching writing. Experience with English Language learners is strongly encouraged.
