Job Description

The Peer Information Consultation (PIC) Program is a University of Michigan Library initiative
that:

  • Develops students in information literacy and research skills who then serve as teachers/tutors to UM community members/peers to improve their academic performance
  • Utilizes the special skills and unique viewpoints of the PIC students to improve Library products and services.

This program is designed to overcome the barriers experienced by both students and library student workers from underrepresented populations. This is accomplished by training and fostering the PIC student workers in library reference and research skills who then assist their peers at library service points and at appropriate venues on campus.

PIC students also support instruction and outreach efforts of the Student Success and Engagement Librarian and various Library programs, events, and services. PIC students will also be assigned to special projects designed to both further library initiatives and receive opportunities for mentoring and additional learning.

The position is part of the Learning and Teaching Division but may assume duties that are
coordinated by other departments throughout the Library system.

Educational Value

Enhancement of Information Literacy and Research Skills: PIC students gain in-depth
knowledge and hands-on experience in information literacy, helping them develop critical
research skills applicable in academic and professional settings.

Teaching and Mentoring Experience: Students serve as teachers and tutors to their peers,
building valuable teaching, mentoring, and communication skills that enhance their leadership
abilities.

Engagement with Diverse Perspectives: Working closely with students from
underrepresented populations and leveraging their unique viewpoints enriches PIC students'
understanding of diverse experiences and challenges.

Support for Instruction and Outreach: Through collaboration with the Student Enrichment and
Community Outreach Librarian, PIC students support the planning and execution of instructional
sessions and outreach events, gaining insights into educational programming and community
engagement.

Mentorship and Professional Development: The program offers opportunities for mentoring,
networking, and engagement in special projects, fostering professional growth and preparing
students for future careers in libraries, education, and beyond.
