Job Description |
The Science Learning Center (SLC) supports more than 20,000 student enrollments each year across 20+ introductory STEM courses through study groups, tutoring, and study spaces in the Chemistry Building and the USB. The marketing and communications intern helps the SLC tell that story to students, faculty, campus partners, and donors. The intern will plan and create content that promotes the SLC's academic programs (study groups, appointment tutoring, and drop-in tutoring), profiles the people who make them work (study group facilitators, tutors, and desk staff), and features students who use SLC programs and spaces. Content will appear on the SLC's Instagram and LinkedIn accounts and in other SLC publicity (website, print pieces, and slides for campus presentations). The intern will also help plan and produce the SLC's content for Giving Blueday, the university's annual online giving day. The position is hybrid. In-person hours are needed for interviews, photography, and time in SLC spaces; writing and editing can be done remotely. The intern will work day-to-day with SLC program staff and meet regularly with the SLC Director, who approves content before it posts. |

Educational Value |
The intern will learn how a university academic support unit communicates with students, campus leadership, and donors, including how to translate program data and research findings into plain-language publicity and how to build a short fundraising campaign around student stories. They will gain experience in interviewing, profile writing, content planning, basic graphic design, donor communications, and accessible digital communication (captions, alt text, plain language). Students interested in communications, marketing, higher education, science writing, advancement, or public relations will leave with a portfolio of published work. |
