Job Description

Job Title:          SAAS Graduate Student Coach for academic support
Department:   Academic Support & Access Partnerships

 

Position Summary
Provide support for students connected to Services for Students with Disabilities that assists with their understanding of time and practice strategies that support their academic growth by facilitating the following:

  • Development of executive functioning skills, learning strategies, and self efficacy

  • Development of healthy habits to decrease academic stress

  • Connection with other SSD and campus resources as needed


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides support to students to improve academic skills 

  • Facilitate individual and group academic coaching sessions 

  • Facilitate study sessions and academic skill building workshops

  • Maintain communication with students 

  • Assist with developing and delivering strategies to keep students informed of support resources 

  • Maintain records and provides student participation data 

  • Participate in weekly training sessions and ASAP meetings

  • Model a variety of effective learning techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that students may employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks

  • Connect students with campus resources as relevant to disclosed needs

  • Work with other academic support centers on campus for student tutoring support needs

  • Provide peers with accountability for planning and follow through on projects

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in sessions

  • Provide support to students during PASS study sessions

    1. Facilitate goal setting for the session

    2. Maintain records and provides student participation data

Educational Value

Graduate student coaches will gain invaluable experience by:

  • identifying executive function strategies and helping students to implement these into their academic and professional goals

  • collaborating and developing individualized goals during academic coaching sessions

  • developing skills in: time management, organization, communication, inclusivity and accessibility

  • supporting students with disabililties in developing self advocacy skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Applicant must be currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, and/or related field required. Experience working with students with disabilities, international, low-income and/or first-generation students is preferred. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite required.

Hourly Rate $20.00/hour
Hours 15.0 to 29.0 hours per week
