Job Description

The UM School of Nursing (UMSN) is seeking Science Learning Circle Leads for the following undergraduate courses for Winter 2025:

  • NURS 210 Human Anatomy and Physiology Body
  • NURS 218 Applied Statistics
  • NURS 240 Pharmacology Foundations of Nursing Practice
  • NURS 262 Therapeutic Nursing Care I
  • NURS 372 Therapeutic Nursing Care II

Science Learning Circles are a supplemental resource coordinated by the School of Nursing to assist students with achieving academic excellence. Cirles will be led by Science Learning Circle Leads who will be expected to demosntrate knowledge of the content area: pedagogical practices that promote well-rounded and deep learning/ critical thinking, and trouble-shooting in the content area; and knowledge of the course-specific materials and course requirements.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate one to two 90-minute study sessions for students for a total of up to 3 hours per week during weekday evenings
  • Offer tips and strategies for successfully completing the course (e.g. setting a schedule to study and complete assignments, attending office hours regularly, breaking down large pieces of information, engaging with peers to share knowledge, practicing self-care)
  • Spend 1 hour per week to review course material, consult with course faculty or course instructional aides, and prepare for sessions
  • Track the attendance of students for each session and participate in program evaluation
  • Attend mandatory paid on-boarding and peer facilitation training
  • At times students may request additional study sessions, small group support, or 1:1 support, making additional hours possible with pre-approval from supervisor

Note: Each Science Learning Circle will meet for 90 minutes in the evening, two or four times per week, for approximately 12 weeks. Science Learning Circles will begin the 3rd week of the semester (or as soon as possible thereafter) and end on the last day of class. Science Learning Circles are typically scheduled between 5-9pm Monday through Thursday based on the convenience of participants and team leads. Virtual and in-person sessions are available.

Job Requirements

Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge of course content. Applicants who have completed the course with an A- or higher and attended and/or led SLC in the past are preferred.
