Job Description

IHP Student Assistant Description

The “Towards Community-Based Shared Stewardship” project, a collaboration between the
Bentley Historical Library (BHL) and the University of Michigan School of Information and
supported by the U-M Inclusive History Project, seeks to hire one or two graduate student
assistants to support the work of surveying and researching BHL collections with content
documenting, sourced from, or otherwise related to marginalized communities in the State of
Michigan. This work will take place in the fall 2024 and winter 2025 terms.

Activities

  • Identifying collections related to African American communities and other communities ofcolor including immigrants, LGBTQIA+ communities, disability communities, and students from these and related communities.
  • Identifying content in collections, or particular collections, that may need to be restricted
  • Identifying finding aids for reparative description work
  • Identifying and assembling potential contacts or reference organizations within the source communities

Desired Background and Interests

  • Interest in or experience working with archival collections, as a researcher or as a collections aide; familiarity with subject headings and searching in archival collections
  • Interest or experience in working with people and communities
  • Skilled in written communication, including outputs like project reports, summaries, and collection assessments
  • Comfortable working with google docs, including spreadsheets and word documents; preferably experience with and interest in data visualization

Position

  • Up to 20 hours per week total (less per student if two students are hired)
  • Hourly pay $17/hour
Educational Value

Students will enhance their skills in strategies for searching in archival collections, understanding subject headings, and representing findings in written, oral, and visual form. They will also learn about the history of archival collecting and current ethical issues in the field, especially reparative work and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Job Requirements

Must be graduate student in the School of Information or closely related field.

Must have interest or experience in working with archival collections and familiarity with subject headings and searching in archival collections.

Should be skilled in written communication and comfortable working with google docs including spreadsheets and experience or interest in data visualization.

Must be able to move up to 30-40 pounds and to occasionally ascend/descend ladders and/or stairs.

Hourly Rate $17.00/hour
