Job Description

Dr. Payne-Sturges is leading a multi-disciplinary research team to unpack the environmental, public health and legal systems through which structural racism shapes respiratory health trends among Black and/or Latinx migrant seasonal farmworkers. Our project advances an innovative combination of environmental exposure analysis, longitudinal legal analysis, system dynamics modeling, and community-based research methods. The multidisciplinary project team convenes academic researchers in environmental health sciences, anthropology, biostatistics, system dynamics and occupational health law working in partnership with el Comité de Apoyo a Los Trabajadores Agricoles (CATA- the Farmworker Support Committee), a community-based advocacy organization. 

Under the supervision of Dr. Devon Payne-Sturge, the RA will provide research support tasks related to this project such as gathering background literature and creating Zotero library database, assisting with preliminary data analyses, and other tasks as needed.

Educational Value

The student will learn the nuances of working in a community-based, collaborative environment with research from a variety of fields.  

Job Requirements

The duties for this position include:

Working with project PI, Dr. Payne-Sturges to identify appropriate area-based measures of structural racism for secondary data analysis.

Conducting policy surveillance research using the legal epidemiology approach on policy interventions implemented by state governments during the first year of the COVID pandemic to addressing COVID among farmworkers. Training on legal epidemiology will be provided.

Supporting project research as needed, this may include conducting literature searches and drafting summaries, assembling background materials, and creating Zotero reference library and administrative tasks.

Coordinating in person team meeting and workshops.

Attending project team meetings.

Attending meetings with PI to discuss updates and new content needs, as needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Strong quantitative research skills

Ability to work independently, manage time, and meet deadlines.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively on a research team.

Interest or expertise in occupational health, community-based participatory research and social justice.

Preferred Qualifications: (The following skills/experiences are desired, but not required.)

Familiarity with REDCap

Knowledge of exposure assessment and survey research

Epidemiological analysis using STATA, SAS and/or R

Spanish language ability (oral and written)
