Job Description

The Social Media Coordinator will assist in designing, creating and implementing social media content for the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (ODEI) at the University of Michigan. The role focuses on highlighting the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives through regular content updates across ODEI’s social media platforms including Instagram, X and LinkedIn.

 

This person will report to the writer/communications specialist. 

 

The duties and responsibilities of the social media coordinator include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop weekly Instagram posts and stories

  • Promote upcoming events through social media

  • Create basic graphic designs

  • Brainstorm innovative and engaging strategies to build the department’s social media presence

  • Write descriptions for DEI initiatives across the University of Michigan

  • Assist with scheduling and managing a social media content calendar

  • Connect U-M DEI programs with student audiences

  • Create additional social media content as needed
     

Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required. The social media coordinator will have the flexibility to work primarily remote, with occasional on-site work for meetings and events. 

 
Educational Value

This position provides hands-on experience in digital marketing and communications with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. Students will gain practical skills in social media management, content creation and strategic communication as well as a deeper awareness of DEI principles and their applications.

Job Requirements
  • Enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Michigan

  • Familiarity with the Ann Arbor campus and its programs

  • Proficiency with social media platforms including Instagram and X; professional experience is preferred but not required

  • Basic design skills in Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva

  • Video editing experience is preferred but not required

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Comfortable conducting interviews and engaging with diverse audiences

  • Highly organized, self-motivated and capable of working independently

  • Familiarity with U-M’s DEI initiatives is a plus
