Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Various operational tasks, including but not limited to desk coverage, acting as a liaison for facilities related issues, and working in collaboration with other student employees to ensure coverage
  • Serving as the primary contact when full-time staff are absent
  • Opening and closing the Law Library
  • Providing assistance to patrons in-person and over the phone at the central Law Library Information Desk
  • Helping patrons locate, check out, and return library materials
  • Answering routine questions about facilities, services, and item locations
  • Making appropriate referrals to reference staff and other Law School departments
  • Keeping accurate statistics about the types of questions received
  • Other Library duties as assigned

Students will gain experience working with library policies and procedures, supervising student
employees, interacting with the public, exercising judgment in a controlled environment, in
addition to learning and practicing principles of excellent customer service.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be responsible, dependable, and approachable
  • Must be actively enrolled as a University of Michigan student in a graduate program
  • Must be able to work Sunday evenings (5pm-midnight) with an option to pick up additional shifts, including a similar shift on Saturday from 5pm to 10pm.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and public relations skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Michigan MSI candidates are encouraged to apply as an opportunity to obtain more experience with library public services and learn about the Law Library
