Job Description

The Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) serves as a focal point for sustainable campus operations. We are part of Planet Blue, a university-wide initiative to promote sustainable operations and engagement. You can learn more about our efforts at ocs.umich.edu. In this role you will primarily work with the OCS Waste Reduction & Engagement team, including (but not limited to) responsibilities such as: 

  • Engage with and educate students and staff about campus waste reduction through presentations, distribution of promotional materials, conducting trainings, and tabling.

  • Develop and implement waste reduction outreach and education specific to on-campus residence halls.

  • Conduct secondary research to inform sustainability initiatives related to waste reduction and diversion and a variety of other sustainability topics.

  • Assist with large annual initiatives such as EarthFest, Office Supply Reuse Day, Student Move-Out/Move-In, waste sorts, Campus Race to Zero Waste, etc.

  • Assist with additional waste reduction efforts as needed, including

    • Perform visual bin audits, provide waste feedback, and replace signage as needed in campus buildings.

    • Assist with U-M’s specialty recycling programs such as CapTure and Recycle Write

Job Requirements
  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse range of people of various social, cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Attention to detail and recording observations

  • Knowledge of sustainability, zero waste principles, and U-M sustainability goals and initiatives preferred

  • A flexible schedule is possible, though some weekend and evening work may be required.

Hourly Rate $17.00/hour to $19.00/hour
Hours 8.0 to 12.0 hours per week
