POSITION SUMMARY:
Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall YMCA experience. The swim instructor or swim coach is responsible for conducting high quality swim instruction to YMCA program participants while following the YMCA of the USA Guidelines. The swim instructor/ coach will ensure the safety of all participants in and around the aquatics area.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Ensures safety of all participants by following aquatics best practices.
  • Adheres to and enforces aquatic rules and procedures consistently and fairly.
  • Provides constant feedback to participants to facilitate improvement while recording and maintaining attendance records.
  • Inspects and immediately notifies appropriate staff of any broken equipment or unsafe aspects of the pool.
  • Secures a qualified substitute sub when needed, and fills out proper sub request form.
  • Utilizes all necessary equipment as related to the program in the proper manner.
  • Maintains all certifications and follows proper requesting procedures for further/advance certifications.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and acts in a professional manner when interacting with members, participants and staff at all times.
  • Acts as a responder in case of injury, accident, or illness in the pool area and provides backup to lifeguards as needed in emergencies and crowd control.
  • Reports all injuries and completes all required forms.
  • Plans and prepares for all swim lessons with the goals and abilities of the students in mind and communicates effectively with parents as needed.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork to include but not limited to: progress reports, skill charts, evaluation reports, and completion certificates.
  • Sets up the facility and equipment needed and puts away all equipment upon completion of lessons.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Exemplify a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Attend scheduled staff meetings and staff in-services.
Reads all YMCA communications.
Any other duties as needed.

An effective YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor or Coach will provide a safe, positive, fun experience which introduces new skills and fosters personal growth for all participants. The Swim Lesson Instructor or Coach will impact the communities understanding of the Y and its mission. Job Requirements
Must be at least 15 years of age.
Prior swim lesson experience preferred.
Current CPR and 1st aid training required or ability to obtain in the first 60 days of employment.
SWIM LESSONS-
YMCA of the USA Swim lesson instructor certification required OR ability to obtain with in the first 90 days of employment
COACH-
USA Swimming coaches’ safety training required OR ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment
Proficiency in swimming and safety skills is required.
Must possess a cooperative spirit committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to staff, lay leaders, YMCA members, program participants and the general public.
Ability to relate with pool patrons in a positive manner.
Must be professional, alert, courteous, and tactful.
Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all staff and swimmers.
Multi-lingual ability is preferred.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
  2. Ability to demonstrate swimming skills and ability to project voice and be heard in pool area.
  3. Physically able to see, hear, and communicate clearly.
  4. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  5. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  6. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  7. Must be able to assist participants weighing up to 180 pounds.
  8. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  9. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  10. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  11. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
Hourly Rate $15.00/hour to $16.85/hour
Hours 10.0 to 20.0 hours per week
