MCAC Adviser

The Center for Educational Outreach is seeking college advisers to work with students and families across Michigan. If you are passionate about promoting equal access to education and believe in the power of community, we want to hear from you. We are specifically seeking 2025 graduates for this role. The College Adviser will be based at one of the following schools:

César Chávez Academy High School, Detroit (fluency in Spanish required)

Chandler Park Academy High School, Harper Woods (immediate hire)

Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, Flint

Jackson High School, Jackson

Western International High School, Detroit (fluency in Spanish required)

More schools to be announced in the near future

This program aims to inspire students to explore higher education opportunities, guide them through university admissions and financial aid processes, and support them in pursuing a college or career path after graduation. Advisers are required to live near their assigned school, and are expected to be present on-site at the designated high school during regular school hours (40 hours a week). Advisers will also need to be able to transport themselves to Ann Arbor for monthly in-person training.

This opportunity includes a four-week residential training on campus at U of M. This is an AmeriCorps opportunity with eligibility for an education award for each term of service. Advisers will receive a $31,200 annual stipend and an AmeriCorps Education Award. Upon completion of the first school year commitment, and at the discretion of the MCAC program, advisers may choose to commit to one additional school year of service.

Job Duties

  • Develop a comprehensive college timeline for each student, including deadlines for admissions and financial aid.

  • Help students complete and submit admissions, financial aid (FAFSA), and scholarship applications.

  • Host regular workshops for students and their families to discuss topics such as the college planning timeline, the importance of post-secondary education, financial aid, and other opportunities.

  • Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors, teachers, and other staff in the assigned high school.

  • Work with local community groups or organizations to connect students and families with relevant services, programs, and supports.

  • Assess the needs of the assigned school and work with the MCAC program director and school personnel to adapt programming to meet these needs.

  • Perform regular data collection for analysis and evaluation by the adviser and program staff.

  • Seek advice from the on-site supervisor at the assigned high school to support the long-term sustainability of the program.

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and professional development sessions throughout the year, some of which will be in-person in Ann Arbor.

Educational Value

Advisers will gain firsthand experience in working within the education sector, particularly in supporting students through the college admissions and financial aid processes.

The role will help advisers develop strong community engagement skills. Working with students, families, and local schools will provide them with a deep understanding of the challenges students face in different communities.

The role includes monthly training in Ann Arbor, where advisers will meet other professionals in the field, expand their networks, and share best practices. These interactions can foster lasting connections that might lead to future career opportunities or collaborations.

The role will provide recent graduates with insight into various career paths in education, counseling, and community outreach. By working in this capacity, advisers can better understand whether they want to pursue further work in education, social services, or related fields.

Advisers will build skills in one-on-one mentoring, group workshops, and counseling, learning how to guide students through complex processes and provide emotional and academic support. These skills are highly transferable to other roles that involve working with young people or providing guidance and support.
