Overview: The Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System (GLANSIS - https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/Programs/glansis/glansis.html) is a both a regional node of the national USGS NAS database and a NOAA project to summarize available science-based information on aquatic invasive species both established within and posing a threat to the Great Lakes region. The program’s core staff are housed at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, Ann Arbor, MI. This position is funded by a grant from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative via NOAA for maintenance and expansion of the GLANSIS database. Job Summary: The GLANSIS student support will work closely with the GLANSIS Program Manager and the GLANSIS Team (including NOAA Principal Investigators) to provide data management and analysis support. You will be responsible for extracting information from literature and entering it into the database; including reference information, species distribution data, ecological and life history information, and impact data. You will be involved in mining data from on-line sources including peer-reviewed and gray literature as well as on-line museum and herbarium collections. You will support the program's maintenance including data analysis, profile updates, risk assessment, needs assessment, and other communications/education product development. Job Duties: Maintenance of the core database (~80%) - Review primary literature and extract data from primary sources
- Format data for efficient bulk upload and, where necessary, enter data manually
- Write risk assessments and species profiles to a standard template
- With experience, peer-review similar work by other team members and students.
- Follow through on reviewer comment and finalization of assessments and profiles for publication.
- Attend weekly team meetings with GLANSIS staff at NOAA-GLERL.
Data Analysis (~10%, ad hoc) – support program manager and research associates with basic extraction and routine analysis of GLANSIS data for risk assessments, needs assessments, NOAA Technical Memoranda, user requests, etc. Communication products (~10%, ad hoc) – support GLANSIS Communications and Education Research Associates with development of products such as story maps, help memos, and curricula. |
