Job Description

25 Summer Academic Peer Leader Job Description and Logistics

Summer APLs will help to orient new domestic and international students to LSA and U-M by:

  • Supporting Newnan academic advisors in orienting students

  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment

  • Explaining LSA degree requirements and academic policies

  • Teaching students to use the LSA Course Guide, Wolverine Access, and Schedule Builder

  • Helping students to brainstorm classes and create balanced schedules

  • Introducing students to academic support services and other campus resources

  • Sharing your experiences and insights

  • Supporting students’ autonomy and decision-making

  • Facilitating connections between students

  • Advising students primarily in small groups and occasionally one-on-one

  • Providing overall program support to ensure the success of orientation

Work Schedule Late April - mid-May

  • Asynchronous online training assignments

May 19 - May 30, 2025

  • 2 weeks of training

  • Full-time (40 hours per week)

  • About half of training consists of synchronous Zoom sessions held during business hours.

  • The other half consists of asynchronous assignments (e.g. learning degree requirements).

June 3 - July 18, 2025

  • 7 weeks of 1-day orientation programs, all on Zoom

  • 4-5 hours per day for total of 20 hours per week through July 18 with an opportunity for additional dates/shifts in late July and early August.

  • Each week consists of:

  • One APL staff meeting with supervisors - Monday from 9:00-10:30

  • One 4-hour orientation program (either morning or afternoon) 4 days per week

  • Each 4-hour orientation program consists of:

  • 2 Newnan Advisors, 3-4 APLs, and approximately 20 students.

  • You'll be assigned to either MTWTH afternoons or TWTHF mornings for the summer.

  • During the first half of the 4-hour Zoom session, as a member of an advising team, you'll introduce students to U-M academic practices and expectations, demonstrate how to use class selection resources, and help students to identify appropriate classes.

  • During the second half of the session, you'll help students to register for classes, introduce them to campus resources, and share tips about making the transition from high school to college.

Pay Rate/Hours

The pay rate is $17.00 per hour. By completing the required training and work, you’ll work about 200 hours and earn approximately $3,400 before taxes.

 

 

Hiring Timeline

  • The application deadline is Friday, February 28, by 5:00 pm.

  • Interviews will take place between Monday March 10 and March 28.

  • Please note that Spring Break is March 1 - March 9.

  • Hiring decisions will be made by Tuesday, April 1.

 

Educational Value

This is a leadership position and will provide students with a wide variety of skills, including mastery of W. Access, the LSA Course Guide, Schedule Builder, and other UM student software. It will also provide students with excellent team building and presentation skills.

Eligibility and Qualifications

  • Current LSA undergraduate, including April 2025 graduates

  • International students graduating in April 2025 must have work authorization starting May 1, 2025.

  • In good academic judiciary standing

  • Empathy and a desire to help others

  • Excellent listening, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency with the LSA Course Guide, Wolverine Access, and Schedule Builder

  • Familiarity and/or involvement with campus resources, events, and student organizations

  • Ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with diverse populations

  • Strong teamwork and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision

  • High level of professional responsibility

  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, sense of humor, and patience

  • Experience as a peer mentor or residence hall staff member is desirable.

  • Public speaking and group facilitation experience is desirable.
