Job Description

The Assistant in Research will assist with two collections-based research projects in the mammal collection housed in the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology (UMMZ). Duties will include: coordinating CT scanning with the UMMZ Biodiversity Imaging Core; coordinating the staining/destaining process of specimens; segmenting tissue in specimens; quantifying segmentation data; creating figures for publications; imaging specimen tags; transcribing specimen data from tags; and other tasks as directed. Opportunities for future fieldwork are also possible.

Educational Value

The UMMZ mammal collection is one of the largest in the world and has been a center for the study of mammalian diversity for decades. The Assistant in Research will have the opportunity to
interact with UMMZ collection staff and students on a daily basis, as well as researchers from other departments and institutions. In doing so, the Assistant in Research will gain knowledge of biological diversity research and the principles applied in museum collections for supporting specimen-based research. In addition, the student will become familiar with mammalian diversity, anatomy, and taxonomy.

Job Requirements

Applicants need to be highly motivated self-starters with good organizational skills and the ability to multitask. The ability to work independently and at times with others is a must. Good manual dexterity sufficient for the duties described is necessary. Attention to detail and strong computer skills are required. Previous experience working with animals or relevant coursework is desired. Applicants with majors in the biological sciences or related disciplines are preferred but not required. Possible extension available beyond Winter 2025 based on work performance.
