Illustration Intern

Educational Value

The illustration intern will join the Department of Communication team to help promote Michigan Medicine’s clinical care, research, news and innovative education and approaches to the world. The intern will work closely with our team of Multimedia Designers, led by our illustrators. Successful candidates will have a portfolio that shows an ability to translate complex ideas into appealing visuals and a desire to learn how illustration can be applied in a variety of ways to support Michigan Medicine’s efforts. Must be willing to join a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

Primary Responsibilities: 

The illustration intern will assist the illustration team in creating original graphics to accompany articles on Health Lab, the news and research blog of the Michigan Medicine Department of Communication. The illustration intern may also be assigned other illustration work to support Michigan Medicine’s mission, including but not limited to: patient education materials, social media promotions, infographics, animated GIFs, and assisting with creating illustrations for video production and animation efforts.

  • Design and develop concepts, images, graphics, animations and other visual communication elements used on Health Lab, social media and other channels.

  • Work with writing teams and Health Lab editor to brainstorm ideas and finalize graphics.

  • Attends weekly editorial meetings.

  • Collaborates with other members of the Communication Team to optimize creative direction of graphic design and visual branding efforts.

  • Animation/video: Collaborates with the video team for graphic needs and other video projects.

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

We are looking for a highly-skilled illustration intern to assist with graphic production for our award-winning healthcare blog, Health Lab. You will have the opportunity to join the communication team for the nationally-ranked hospital system and also illustrate an online publication that reaches millions of readers annually with a significant social media following. We are in search of someone with an interest in image curation and illustration for online publications and a keen sense of how imagery can grab attention in a crowded social landscape. Health Lab is a main component of the Department of Communication’s content marketing and brand building efforts to promote Michigan Medicine’s clinical care, research, and innovative educational approaches to the world.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Open to currently enrolled college students.

  • A strong portfolio (5 - 10 images) of illustration work that demonstrates knowledge of composition, ability to convey information, and artistic ability.

  • Ability to conceptualize illustrations based on prompts and feedback from subject matter experts and iterate on multiple concepts to bring a finished piece to publish.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently while managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Comfortable with print and digital assignments.

  • Consistently displays collaborative approach to work with a positive, upbeat, professional and responsible attitude.

  • Exceptional communication skills.

  • Keen understanding of the role of infographics and other visual elements play in improving online communication effectiveness and audience engagement.

  • Demonstrable proficiency in a combination of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Procreate for iPad.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Experience with Adobe After Effects or other animation software.

  • Interest in motion graphics and animation and how to prepare illustration files for animation.

  • Experience with photo editing and touch-ups is a plus.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
