Job Summary The Digital Media Commons (DMC) in the James and Anne Duderstadt Center (DC) is hiring students passionate about learning and teaching new skills in the fields of design, fabrication, and digital media production for its Ground Connections Fellowship Program. Fellows support U-M students, faculty and staff members using the DMC’s technologies. This position is a unique opportunity to work in a technology-rich, student-centered, creative environment. Fellows will learn the following sets of skills to support our user base: Fabrication skills: 3D printing, laser cutting, PCB milling, and woodworking Multimedia skills: audio and video production and editing, graphic design, media conversion, and stop-motion animation Prototyping and design skills: 3D sketching, rapid analog prototyping, paper crafting, and sewing Communication, collaboration, and customer service skills
The Fellowship program has a multi-year structure of training. During the first year, you will be trained in the essential skills to staff and support the following service locations: the Fabrication Underground, Groundworks Media Lab, the Multimedia Workrooms, the Personal Studio, and the Design Labs (see our website for descriptions of each space). In your third semester and beyond, you'll pick an area of specialization to develop expertise based on your individual interests and goals. Job Duties and Responsibilities Attend shifts in the Ground Connections spaces in the Duderstadt Center according to a schedule you develop with the Student Program Manager During your shifts, accomplish required training in communication and technical skills for each location, offered through a combination of in-person mentoring and online Canvas modules Manage the Ground Connections space on shift: provide individual consultations to assist users of the space; greet users and track how they interact with the space’s resources; promote collaboration within the space; maintain the space’s tools, technology and infrastructure; help maintain a safe and clean work environment; and support Ground Connections workshops, projects and events Seek assistance from other fellows as you learn, and assist other fellows as they learn After completing your first-year training, develop specialized expertise and skills in area or topic of your choice
Compensation Starting pay for all fellows is $15 during training, with regular pay increases throughout the program for fellows who meet performance expectations. This position is available as both a Work-Study and non-Work-Study position. While we encourage everyone to apply, applicants with Work-Study funding will be given priority.
