Compensation: $16/hour

Hours: Will vary by week, approximately 10-12 hours per week

Program Summary

The Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR) is a social justice education program that blends theory and experiential learning to facilitate students’ learning around social group identity, social inequality, and intergroup relations. 

 

CommonGround, a student-run program within IGR, provides workshops for groups of UM students (student organizations, courses, etc.) by request. The workshops aim to raise awareness about social identities, power, privilege, and oppression. CommonGround prepares undergraduate and graduate students to create and facilitate these interactive workshops.

 

The Programming Team is the group of undergraduate student staff and graduate interns that manages program operations and supports the selection, training, and coaching of the workshop facilitators in CommonGround. Being a member of the Programming Team is an opportunity to work collaboratively with other student leaders who are passionate about social justice education. 

 

IGR is hiring one Program Coordinator for the CommonGround workshop program.

 

Job Description 

The role of the Program Coordinator helps sustain the program through workshop management, and upholding a healthy CommonGround community rooted in social justice. 

 

The Program Coordinator’s main responsibility is managing workshops. Managing workshops includes fostering intentional relationships with requesters to aid the process of solidifying workshop goals, and coaching/collaborating with workshop facilitators/curriculum specialists to execute social justice based workshops.

 

The Program Coordinator is also responsible for investing time building relationships with Programming Team staff, and overall CommonGround co-hort. Most of the collaboration points entail, but are not limited to, on-boarding/training workshop facilitators, supervision meetings, planning/attending CommonGround meetings, and creating a sense of belonging for all folks involved in CommonGround. 

 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Manage workshops: Conduct intake meetings, choose facilitators for workshops, organize and lead workshop planning meetings and debrief meetings

  • Collaborate with the other Program Coordinator to create a cohesive team

  • Become familiar with CommonGround curriculum and other activity materials to develop workshop agendas

  • Advise and support workshop facilitators through regular meetings

  • Intentional community building with the Programming team, Workshop facilitators, and Curriculum Specialist

  • Sign and agree to learning agreement for the academic year

 

Programming Team work

  • Provide leadership and direction for CommonGround program

  • Attend 1.5 hour weekly Programming (staff) meetings 

  • Help create and lead training sessions for workshop facilitators 

  • Assist with recruiting and selecting new staff and facilitators 

  • Attend weekly supervision meetings and perform other administrative tasks/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor 

  • Commit to a regular 10-12 hour/week schedule, with some additional night and weekends for training retreats and meetings

Educational Value of this job 

  • Students will learn and develop skills related to peer education/facilitation, relationship & community building, program development and assessment/evaluation.

  • Students will increase their awareness of diversity, inclusion, social justice issues.

  • Students will begin to explore communication preferences, feedback, and conflict styles, at the intersection of supervision, and working across differences. 

  • Students will be challenged to learn about wellness as an important pillar for social justice.

  • Attend the Programming Team retreat the week of August 18th.

  • Attend a required training retreat from 3-8pm on the following Fridays: August 29, September 5, September 12.

  • Attend required 2 hour biweekly (every 2 weeks) meetings throughout the semester. For the Fall 2024 semester, biweekly meetings will take place on Fridays from 3-5pm. You must be available on the following dates from 3-5pm: September 26, October 10, October 24, November 7, November 21, and December 5.

  • Must be a current/enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Michigan 

  • Strong understanding and commitment to social justice education & intergroup relations; knowledge of social identities, power, privilege, and oppression

  • Passionate about creating spaces for intergroup dialogue

  • Willing to be vulnerable and step outside comfort zone

  • Excellent organization & time management skills, attention to detail, reliable, self-motivated, and can meet deadlines

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Can work independently and in a team environment with other students and staff 

  • Preferred: experience with teaching, training, or facilitation
