Position: Program Assistant 

Compensation: $16/hour

Hours: Will vary by week, approximately 8-10 hours per week

Program Summary

The Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR) is a social justice education program that blends theory and experiential learning to facilitate students’ learning around social group identity, social inequality, and intergroup relations. 

 

CommonGround, a student-run program within IGR, provides workshops for groups of UM students (student organizations, courses, etc.) by request. The workshops aim to raise awareness about social identities, power, privilege, and oppression. CommonGround prepares undergraduate and graduate students to create and facilitate these interactive workshops.

 

The Programming Team is the group of undergraduate student staff and graduate interns that manages program operations and supports the selection, training, and coaching of the student volunteers in CommonGround. Being a member of the Programming Team is an opportunity to work collaboratively with other student leaders who are passionate about social justice education. 

 

IGR is hiring a Program Assistant for the CommonGround workshop program.

 

Job Description 

The Program Assistant keeps a thorough record of CommonGround’s workshops, activities, and supplies. This role is also responsible for the evaluation and assessment of our workshops. Additionally, the Program Assistant provides valuable support to other team members by providing input on the direction of the program. 

 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Maintain the Qualtrics workshop evaluation database

  • Manage all workshop evaluation surveys

    • Manually enter survey responses using Qualtrics platform

    • Analyze evaluation data to create reports/presentations each semester and recommend changes to workshops

    • Complete other small research/assessment/evaluation projects, as needed

  • Attend workshops in order to evaluate workshops

  • Assist in updating workshop curriculum

  • Assist in preparing materials and purchasing food for retreats and biweekly meetings

  • Maintain/organize CommonGround materials and office

  • Support the mission of CommonGround as an active member of the programming team

    • Attend weekly Programming Team (staff) meetings

    • Co-facilitate workshops, weekly meetings, and sections of the training retreats

    • Assist with marketing, recruitment, and selection of new members

  • Attend weekly supervision meetings and perform other administrative tasks/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor  

  • Maintain communication with other IGR student units such as the Student Experience Team and the Recruitment Team

Programming Team work

  • Provide leadership and direction for CommonGround program

  • Attend 1.5 hour weekly ProgrammingTeam (staff) meetings 

  • Help create and lead training sessions for workshop facilitators 

  • Assist with recruiting and selecting new staff and facilitators 

  • Attend weekly supervision meetings and perform other administrative tasks/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor 

  • Commit to a regular 8-10 hour/week work schedule, with some occasional nights and weekends

Job Requirements 

  • Must be able to start working the week of August 18th.

  • Attend the Programming Team retreat the week of August 18th.

  • Attend a required training retreat from 3-8pm on the following Fridays: August 29, September 5, September 12.

  • Attend required 2 hour biweekly (every 2 weeks) meetings throughout the semester. For the Fall 2024 semester, biweekly meetings will take place on Fridays from 3-5pm. You must be available on the following dates from 3-5pm: September 26, October 10, October 24, November 7, November 21, and December 5.

    • These meetings are for facilitators to practice facilitation skills, learn new activities, engage in dialogue about different social identity and social justice topics and build and strengthen the CommonGround/IGR community. 

  • Must be a current/enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Michigan 

  • A strong understanding and commitment to social justice education & intergroup relations; knowledge of social identities, power, privilege, and oppression

  • Excellent organization & time management skills, attention to detail, reliable, self-motivated, and can meet deadlines

  • Can work independently and in a team environment with other students and staff 

  • Passionate about creating spaces for intergroup dialogue

  • Willing to be vulnerable and step outside comfort zone

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Preferred: familiarity with Qualtrics, experience with teaching, training, or facilitation

 

Hourly Rate $16.00/hour
